About the Artist
Justin Hoffman, an American ceramic artist and painter, was born in 1974. He currently resides in the San Francisco Bay Area. Hoffman’s upbringing in Michigan was surrounded by art, with artists on both sides of his family. Initially, he experimented with oil and mixed-media painting at a young age. In 2017, he transitioned to clay, which has become the primary medium for his work. Hoffman’s work constantly shift between sculpture, vessels, and three-dimensional objects, drawing inspiration from the renowned ceramic artists of Japan. Each piece is meticulously crafted by hand, making it unique and one-of-a-kind. Hoffman approaches each piece with the same mindset as a blank canvas, ensuring the development of layers of depth and texture. He has had various exhibitions in California, New York, New Mexico, and New Zealand. Additionally, he has studied wood-firing in Japan under the guidance of two master potters and participated in a Noborigama firing in Seto, Japan. Currently, Hoffman resides and works in his private studio in Walnut Creek, California.
